Meet Gene and Helen Justice
After college, Gene Justice worked for IBM for 34 years. When he retired, he was VP of World Trade Corporation, IBM’s international subsidiary. His career took him and his wife, Helen, overseas for years as they made their home in Paris, France and traveled through Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. When he was ready to retire, he wanted to be somewhere in the United States with “international flavor” which brought him to Washington, D.C.
In 1988, the Governor at the time was looking for someone to head an international program and Gene was a natural fit. From then on, they have called Hampton Roads home. Mrs. Justice has been involved with charities such as Lee’s Friends and Kings Daughters and has been on the Board of the Opera Guild. In their retirement they continue to stay busy and both serve on some of the committees at Harbor’s Edge.
What made you choose Harbor’s Edge?
We knew we were ready to retire and simplify life. All of the chores associated with owning a home were becoming a hassle. Our children live in widely disbursed locations and we like living alone where we don’t have to burden our children. We also wanted the security of a lifetime of care. We liked the building and the flexible financial options Harbor’s Edge offered to fit our needs.
What is the best perk to living at Harbor’s Edge?
There isn’t a single best perk. The relationships between the residents and staff are terrific. You get to know people very quickly and have close friendships while family is not around.
Why did you choose to retire in Norfolk, VA?
We like how compact this area is. Everything is close; the opera, museums, restaurants, and cultural activities. There is so much to do within a two mile radius.
What would you say to someone who was considering a move to Harbor’s Edge?
Truly understanding the financial piece of how the LifeCare Program works will help people make this decision. We love it here! We can still entertain outside guests with the in-house catering that is available. There is less responsibility here which means more free time. We keep busy here with the fitness programs and all of the activities; there are so many choices for things to do.
