Today is National Wear Red Day, and we’re proudly donning our red at Harbor’s Edge! The movement was created by the American Heart Association to raise women’s heart health awareness. I was surprised to learn that cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women, causing approximately one death every minute. Luckily, there are many preventative measures you can take to protect yourself. The healthy lifestyle that we promote to residents and employees at Harbor’s Edge embodies several ways you can keep your heart strong!

First and foremost, make sure your doctor is monitoring your blood pressure and cholesterol levels regularly. Ensure that you’re eating a nutritious, balanced diet. Eat all the fruits, vegetables, fiber, whole grains, nuts and legumes you can get your hands on! Try to limit your intake of high-fat dairy products, red meat, sugary beverages, alcohol and cigarettes. Our menus at Harbor’s Edge always include a plethora of healthy, low-calorie options.

Exercise consistently at your own pace. One of the easiest and least intimidating ways to incorporate more exercise is to tweak everyday habits you’re already accustomed to. Start stretching while you’re watching the morning news, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator when you can, take the long way when walking to your destination. Kori, our Fitness Director, offers one-on-one training so that she can tailor a workout to fit your needs perfectly.

Ladies, everywhere, please take care of yourselves and your hearts. And please spread the word to your mothers, daughters, nieces, aunts, cousins, friends and neighbors. Go red for women today!
