Harbor’s Edge, Norfolk’s premier continuing care retirement community, is proud to announce that it’s resident, Dr. G. William Whitehurst, is being honored by the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk with the 2014 Norfolk’s First Citizen Award.

Norfolk, VA, March 2, 2015 – Dr. Whitehurst has been a resident at Harbor’s Edge since its inception in 2004. His late wife, Janie Whitehurst, was on the Board and an integral part of the start of the community. On March 7, 2015, Dr. Whitehurst will be awarded with the 2014 First Citizen’s Award for his continued service to the city.

Dr. Whitehurst is a native of Norfolk. He served in World War II with the U.S. Navy. He went to college to ultimately receive his Ph.D. in American Diplomatic History from West Virginia University. Following school he had a successful career in teaching at Old Dominion University until 1968 when he was elected into Congress. As a Republican, he served in the House of Representatives until 1987 when he retired. In his retirement, Dr. Whitehurst is the Kaufman Lecturer in Public Affairs at Old Dominion University and resides at Harbor’s Edge Retirement Community in the Ghent area of Norfolk, VA. He is being awarded the First Citizen Award from the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk for his continued support and service to the city of Norfolk. Harbor’s Edge has been lucky to have over 15 previous honorees associated with the Community.
